For those who love hojicha, we also offer Stems Hojicha – a stems-only version of hojicha. Compared to our regular Gokujo Hojicha, Stems Hojicha has a deeper roasted flavor and a unique “stems” character- round, hearty, and crisp. If you love the taste of Gokujo Hojicha, but are looking for a tea that is more full-bodied, then this is a must-try.

For your first taste of hojicha, we recommend the leaves and stems version, Gokujo Hojicha.

Hojicha

When you drink hojicha for the first time, you might be surprised that it is a type of Japanese green tea, given its amber color. This roasted bancha releases an amazingly rich aroma that completely fills the room. The flavor is light-bodied, without much astringency.

Hojicha can be enjoyed in the evening as well as in the morning or afternoon. It tastes great on its own, with sweets, or accompanying a meal. Flavorful and refreshing, this tea is an absolute favorite among Ippodo patrons.

How to Prepare

Standard Brew
1. Measure the leaves
4 tbsp. (10 g / 0.35 oz)
 
2. Add hot water
100°C (212°F)
240 mL (8 oz)
3. Brew
30 seconds
Don't shake the teapot while brewing
4. Serve
Pour out every last drop

Great everyday tea

Very enjoyable Kuki Hojicha anytime of the day because it has less caffeine. Full bodied, not too smoky, delicious hot or cold.
As Ippodo site in Japanese suggested, I enjoyed to make 3 pots with the same leaves. It paired great with food like tempura, tonkatsu, stair fly, buttery cake, cookies and wagashi etc. Thank you!

Rich and Delicious

Amazing Hojicha

I’ve had several Hohichas before, but none are as aromatic and full of roasted flavor as this one. I personally haven’t modified the instructions for brewing yet, but the recommended brewing method works excellently. Definitely would recommend for anyone who likes the roasted aspect of Hojicha or wants to try something new; the tea immediately reminded me of a lighter, less acidic coffee when I first prepared it.
