Seiun - 40g
Seiun places firmly in our rich category. Its lingering finish and full umami character make it a wise choice for fans of a reflective, satisfying matcha teatime.
Koicha: 4g (2 tsp.)
Seiun is a fine choice for those who enjoy matcha with plentiful umami and sweetness, balanced by a little astringency. It has a medium body, with a round aftertaste and a pleasantly sweet aroma. As koicha, this matcha’s nuances are much more prominent, and you can fully appreciate its balance of umami, astringency, and fragrance. As usucha, Seiun is good option for everyday teatime, served straight and with cookies, cakes, or other sweets. In a matcha latte, its mild astringency pairs well with the milk, producing a softer drink with more umami than our lighter blends.

This is my first try with Seiun. I am very pleased.
Smooth and creamy. A bit short on finish, but overall nice balance.
I have been a Japanese green tea aficionado for a long time, and drink it daily. This matcha is the perfect blend of sweetness and umami. I visited the Ippodo shop in Tokyo last summer, and was delighted by Seiun. I will continue drinking it for a long time. Much of the matcha available in the U.S. is nowhere near as good as this.
I ordered Seiun as my first Ippodo matcha. I was looking for something bold in umami flavor with earthy background notes. I've had a lot of different matchas from Japan and the U.S. The U.S. matcha only proved to be bitter, flavorless, or both. I was ecstatic when I found this brand from Kyoto and even more excited that they had a U.S. site for faster delivery! When my Seiun arrived, it was in a beautiful tin. Opened it up and was greeted with a vibrant green color - one that I've never seen in matcha powder before! Everything I was looking for in a matcha was finally in front of me.
I did not make this traditionally, as I've been hooked on matcha lattes lately, so I used more matcha for each drink than the next person would if drinking it traditionally. I drank this nearly every day for almost a month and just ran out. I'm immediately back for more!
SO delicious, highly recommend!
This is my second foray into the Ippodo line. Previously, I'd only tried the wakamatsu-no-mukashi, which was the flavor profile I expected for this one. However, this is a much sweeter matcha without the sometimes overpowering flavor of savory matchas. As a thicker usucha (a little thinner) it has tremendous complexity and incredibly smooth. I'm moving on to the next 3 "richer" matchas when I'm done with this can, yet I will definitely be buying a can of Seiun whenever I'm in need of a good koicha grade matcha. The price point is excellent and shipping incredibly quick. So glad there's a US shop now, it beats having to ship orders from Japan!
