Kuon is a special-release matcha exclusive to our USA and Canadian customers. Originally available in the Ippodo New York store, this matcha has a different personality than the other high grades in the regular Ippodo lineup. Kuon ranks above Ummon-no-mukashi.
The regular selection of Ippodo matchas will reflect our well-loved preference for matcha flavor: rich, sweeter, and full-bodied matcha in the high grade, and more bitter, less sweet, light-bodied matchas in the lower range. All have similar flavor profiles and differ from each other depending on their rank.
Kuon has a vivid green color, a long aftertaste, and a rich umami that make it a delight like other high grade matchas. However, Kuon stands out because it has a uniquely bright bitterness. Of course, all matcha will have some bitterness, but Kuon's bitterness is more refined, comparable to a wine with refined tannins.
For our American and Canadian fans who love the strength and fullness of Ippodo's high grade matcha, Kuon is an exciting, different addition to the lineup. Unparalleled as koicha; striking as usucha.
Characterized by its rich aroma, full-bodied mellow sweetness, and vivid green color, matcha is a favorite among tea lovers in Japan. Ground from shade-cultivated tea leaves, matcha is rich in theanine -- an amino acid responsible for matcha's umami (translates to “savory deliciousness” and is also known as the fifth taste). Generally, the higher the grade, the richer the umami taste.

I have always had matcha with a bite. This is a Matcha I would recommend to beginners. Or if you are in the mood for a smooth taste that if you want to relax. . I enjoyed it. It’s not like the New Year which is stronger with slight bitter. And not as strong as drinking your ceremonial drink. I love ceremonial Matcha. I hope this review helps.
Have a good one everyone.
Rich, full-bodied, and not too bitter, and overall very smooth. It reminds me of some tea ceremonies I've attended.
A nice aroma to it. Slightly savory smell, very fresh. Nice full body. Most notable is the aftertaste. Very long and satisfying astringency. All characteristics are very balanced and easy to be appreciated! Very different from the ummon-no-mukashi and shoin-no-mukashi experience!
Thank you Ippodo for such a great Matcha!
