Taste notes

Our Special New Year’s Matcha release for 2021, Ushi-mukashi, features a remarkable sweet fragrance that fills the room as soon as you start to prepare it. Its flavor is mellow, with plentiful sweetness and umami blossoming through the finish. A high grade matcha blend, its vibrant color fits with the celebratory New Year's season.

We recommend preparing this matcha straight with water as koicha or usucha, to experience its deep fragrance, pure umami, and full-bodied aftertaste.

A Matcha Specially Released for New Year’s

New Year’s is the most important holiday in Japan, and drinking matcha is a part of the celebrations. Traditionally, this New Year’s Matcha is used in the first tea ceremony of the year (hatsugama). In the home, families will sit down with a bowl of matcha during their holiday together, enjoying the warmth of each other’s company. Beyond these traditions, this is a great matcha for casual personal enjoyment, or as a thoughtful gift.

Year of the Ox label

In celebration of 2021, the Year of the Ox, this special label depicts a mild-mannered ox taking a break. We hope this cute design will add to the delight of New Year’s and winter festivities.

*Ushi means “ox” or “cow” in Japanese, and this is the meaning of the name Ushi-mukashi.

Fantastic matcha. I wish this was a permanent addition to the Ippodo line. I almost prefer it to the Ummon, which is my usual go-to.
