Kaboku has a deep, rich character with full umami and a long aftertaste. Recommended for fans of hearty sencha.
With a full-bodied sweetness that softly lingers on the tongue, and a flowery fragrance that permeates the air, Kaboku is a sencha for those who appreciate a high-class, robust sencha. We also recommend this tea as cold brew, to taste the full potential of its deep umami and sweetness.
Ways to Prepare

I am new to senchas having only previously experienced Kumpu. While Kumpu was very nice, Kaboku is quite refreshing (particularly iced). I can't think of a more pleasing green tea to round out the dog days of summer!
A tea that capitalizes on its first impression, which is already quite impressive. Plump, rounded, generous. Clear space for this one.
This tea, when prepared similar to other green teas, is very nice. Unfortunately, the instructions on the packaging and website seem highly inaccurate. Most green teas use 1-2 tsp/7 oz at 170 F or so. Prepared this way, this is a really enjoyable tea. Following the instructions to prepare 2 TBSP/7 oz leads to an undrinkable flavor. I am not a novice tea drinker and do enjoy a full bodied tea. Following the instructions, the bitterness is unbearable however. It was so disgusting that I had to throw out the entire pot...a significant portion of an expensive tea wasted. I probably won't purchase again from Ippodo because of this.
Dear Joshua M.,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Kaboku sencha. You have provided valuable information for our customers.
The style of tea we use at Ippodo Tea is unique even in Japan. The shape of our tea leaves are like tightly twisted needles and this particular style of tea leaf is limited in the Japanese green tea market right now. This needle-like tea is different from the common style of Japanese green tea (referred to as Fukamushi; the leaves are smaller and contain more little flakes in comparison to Ippodo Tea’s.)
Because of this difference in shape, the leaves slowly unravel with every pour, meaning our tea can be brewed many times. By using this amount of leaves from the beginning, there is actually less waste of leaves as it can be enjoyed at least up to the 3rd pot with the same satisfying taste. This is why our instructions on the package recommend 10grams of tea leaves.
We are happy you were able to adapt our instructions to your preference because, ultimately, your enjoyment of the tea is our priority. And your instructions have the potential to help others enjoy this tea as well.
Sencha Kaboku is our best Sencha in our regular Sencha line-up. We are so happy to hear that you praised it.
Again, thank you for your review comment, we appreciate it. Please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org should you have any further questions or concerns. We always appreciate your feedback.

This is our favorite sencha. Very smooth and assertive without being bitter with a touch of umami.
