Kyogoku-no-mukashi - 20g
Kyogoku-no-mukashi has an approachable, mellow character. Usually a Kyoto-exclusive release, this matcha is available this once on ippodotea.com.
Koicha: 4 g (2 tsp.)
This limited release is a memento for trips cancelled—a chance for our fans to escape to Kyoto in a bowl of matcha. Its smooth, mellow character makes it one of the most approachable matcha blends in our selection.
Usually Kyogoku-no-mukashi is only available in-person in Kyoto. Years ago, we developed this blend and named it after an old street from the Heian-Kyo capital that preceded the modern Kyoto City.
During the past year, restrictions have prevented travel to our main store in Kyoto, and many frequent customers have sadly had to cancel their plans to visit for the near future.
For a short time, we are making this matcha available specially on ippodotea.com. Make a bowl of Kyogoku-no-mukashi and sip while you dream of travelling to Kyoto when it becomes possible again.
In line with other Ippodo rich category matcha, Kyogoku-no-mukashi is satisfying, with depth of flavor, a full body, and a long aftertaste. It is gentler than others in this category, and its minimal astringency is overshadowed by full umami and sweet tastes.
We serve Kyogoku-no-mukashi our Kyoto Main Store tearoom, and for years it has been popular for first-time matcha drinkers and matcha devotees alike.
We recommend Kyogoku-no-mukashi as koicha thick matcha and regular usucha (hot or iced). For matcha lattes, we usually recommend a medium-to-light category matcha with more astringency, but you may enjoy a Kyogoku-no-mukashi latte if you enjoy rich creaminess.
