Obukucha is a genmaicha that combines the light sweetness of high grade yanagi leaves with the heartiness of roasted rice. When you drink hojicha for the first time, you might be surprised that it is a type of Japanese green tea, given its amber color. This roasted bancha releases an amazingly rich aroma that completely fills the room. The flavor is light-bodied, without much astringency.

I didn't know that Obukucha was an oshogatsu tradition, but after trying this tea, I will look forward to getting it every year. It is really flavorful with a very slight, pleasant bitterness. I also enjoy the hojicha. I bought myself the gift set with the intention of reusing the tins and will buy the bags in the future and just refill them. I hope that this gift set is available next year so I can order it for a friend.
This gift (to myself :)) was expertly packaged with beautiful Japanese paper and an equally beautiful box. The obukucha is a lovely tea and I also got that in the teapot bags. The hojicha is very good as well; I'm not used to the bold, roasted version of green tea yet, so I'm going to keep playing with my leaf to water ratio and make sure I enjoy it!
I never had either of these teas before now, but they are really good. I sip on the Obukucha in the evening to wind down for the day. The Hojicha is my new tea to sip on when I am getting work done in my office. It just has that "I got stuff to do" kind of taste. I plan on getting more of both of these flavors in the future.
