A special holiday release, this set pairs our winter-exclusive genmaicha Obukucha, with the popular roasted green tea Hojicha.
This holiday gift set pairs two of our favorite teas to drink in winter. Serve aromatic and light-bodied Obukucha at a festive dinner with family and friends. When you come in from the cold, warm up with Hojicha and some cookies at teatime. Packaged in a Japanese paper box and hand-wrapped with Japanese paper, this set makes for a thoughtful gift.
In Japan, the important New Year’s holiday is an occasion to gather with family — which of course calls for tea. We release this Obukucha exclusively around the holiday season, as a tea to drink in celebration of the arrival of a new year. Obukucha is a genmaicha that combines the light sweetness of high grade yanagi leaves with the heartiness of roasted rice. Choose this tea for a fuller-bodied genmaicha that is satisfying in the heart of winter.
When you drink hojicha for the first time, you might be surprised that it is a type of Japanese green tea, given its amber color. This roasted bancha releases an amazingly rich aroma that completely fills the room. The flavor is light-bodied, without much astringency.
Ways to Prepare
Ippodo teas have wonderful flavor and we look forward to our cup of hojicha every evening. I was excited to find that I could order Ippodo here in the U.S. since we have not been able to get back to Kyoto during the pandemic. As well as special gifts for close friends who also miss the taste of excellent Japanese tea, I added one set for us. I know we will be ordering again in 2022!
Both hojicha and onukucha are my all time favourite. This is the best tea combination for winter. Both of them have a sweet undertone. The flavour is nutty and smoky. I highly recommend it!
After thirty-two years in Kyoto, I find myself in Colorado without a choice! When I saw that Ippodo was available in the US I was full of joy. Americans seem to really like Obukucha and Hojicha (my mom used to beg for it!), and it's taken away some of my homesickness as winter comes near.
With gratitude! Oshougatsu will be happier this year! (I've reordered twice!)
I didn't know that Obukucha was an oshogatsu tradition, but after trying this tea, I will look forward to getting it every year. It is really flavorful with a very slight, pleasant bitterness. I also enjoy the hojicha. I bought myself the gift set with the intention of reusing the tins and will buy the bags in the future and just refill them. I hope that this gift set is available next year so I can order it for a friend.
This gift (to myself :)) was expertly packaged with beautiful Japanese paper and an equally beautiful box. The obukucha is a lovely tea and I also got that in the teapot bags. The hojicha is very good as well; I'm not used to the bold, roasted version of green tea yet, so I'm going to keep playing with my leaf to water ratio and make sure I enjoy it!
