Every year, the highest-regarded tencha* farmers in Japan enter the best of their harvest into tea competitions, hoping to earn prestige and recognition for their efforts. Premium Select Matcha is our exclusive blend of these farmers’ competition-level harvests—hand-selected by our president from farms only in the Kyoto region.

The highest quality tencha fields receive constant hands-on care and attention. Farmers strictly monitor and fertilize the soil to keep it lofty and nutritious. They adjust the shades that cover the field, precisely controlling the level of darkness for the sprouting new leaves. They attend to the field in person, every day, to ensure the harvest comes out perfectly. The result of their efforts is a rare and valuable harvest. As a result, only a limited quantity of this tea is available even in Japan.

*Tencha is the name for shade-grown tea leaves ground to make matcha powder.

Taste Notes

We are enjoying this year’s Premium Select Matcha for its soaring aroma and its abundant, sweet umami. When you take a sip, listen for the pureness and delicacy of its beautiful aftertaste. We recommend trying this tea first as koicha (thick tea), in order to best appreciate its flavor and aroma, and the effort that the farmers went through to produce such a high-quality tea.

Unlike our other matchas available year-round, which are blended for consistency, Premium Select Matcha varies depending on the growing conditions each year.

Ways to prepare

Thin matcha
1. Sift Matcha
2 g (0.07 oz)
1.5 heaping tea ladles or 1 level teaspoon
2. Add hot water
80°C (176°F)
60 mL (2 oz)
First pour water into teacup to cool it to 80°C, then pour into tea bowl.
3. Whisk
15 seconds
Whisk vigorously 15 seconds, making an "M" shape.
Thick matcha
1. Sift Matcha
4 g (0.14 oz)
3 heaping tea ladles or 2 level teaspoons
2. Add hot water
80°C (176°F)
30 mL (1 oz)
Cool boiling water in teacup, then pour into bowl, just covering matcha powder.
3. Whisk
15 seconds
Mix slowly for 15 seconds moving back and forth.

The taste is smooth and sweet with a delightful after taste. Great as hot tea and fantastic as a latte. Its become my everyday ritual to make a latte at work. I love the taste and aroma. And the energy boost is a nice plus without the caffeine crush.
