We recommend Horai-no-mukashi for your first taste of Ippodo matcha, as it is a subtle balance of matcha's natural umami flavor with a touch of astringency.
Characterized by its rich aroma, full-bodied mellow sweetness, and vivid green color, matcha is a favorite among tea lovers in Japan. Ground from shade-cultivated tea leaves, matcha is rich in theanine -- an amino acid responsible for matcha's umami (translates to “savory deliciousness” and is also known as the fifth taste). Generally, the higher the grade, the richer the umami taste.
My boys and I visited Ippodo in NYC while on a family vacation last summer and enjoyed the most delicious matcha we have had outside of Japan. Given the current social distancing measures in place, we wanted to show our support and of course enjoy some delicious matcha and matcha lattes at home. This variety is exceptional as was the timely service. Looking forward to visiting in person someday.
Delicious matcha and wonderful service!
Ippodo delivers the best products consistently. My bowl of Matcha is an indispensable part of my morning, and it would not be the same without Ippodo!
We discovered Ippodo in October while visiting Kyoto. What a cool shop! I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to still purchase their delightful matcha from home. A little taste of Japan each morning. I often make matcha latte's as well - yummy.
Best matcha. Love it. No more coffee
Really loved this matcha!
I like really well-balanced matcha: in my view that's a matcha that's not too earthy, not too astringent, with a really balanced umami-sweet profile, and yet loses none of it's "matcha" flavour. I found I could brew this matcha with slightly more powder than the instructions specify, at a hot temp (80-90 C), and it was really delightful. Will consider buying again next time I order from Ippodo!
This has been one of the best matcha blends for everyday ise, especially for making usucha!
