Package Formats

Depending on the variety, our matcha comes is several sizes and shapes. In the case of Sayaka, our most popular blend, it comes in a 40g can (~20 servings), a 20g can (~10 servings, named Horai in this size), and a 100g resealable bag (~50 servings) for frequent drinkers. Regardless of the size, our storage recommendations remain the same.

Storage Basics

To keep your matcha fresh, store it in an opaque, tightly sealed container in a cupboard away from spices, coffee, and other strong odors.

Avoid exposure to:
  1. Open air (oxygen)
  2. Strong odors
  3. Direct sunlight
  4. Heat sources

These four will damage your matcha's fragrance and deliciousness.

How long to enjoy matcha after opening?

Matcha and other Japanese green teas don’t spoil after opening. However, they will gradually start to lose their freshness after you first open the package.

We recommend consuming your matcha within a month of opening for the absolute best taste.

What is Ippodo matcha’s best-by date?

The best-by date is printed on a sticker on the matcha package in the YEAR.MONTH.DATE format.

While matcha does not spoil, we recommend opening and enjoying it before this date for the best quality.

Any other tips?

Many of our matchas come packaged in a foil bag inside the can or box. To keep your matcha as delicious as possible, keep your matcha in the foil bag it comes in, rolled up and clipped closed in between uses.

Frequent matcha drinkers may choose to pour the matcha directly into a can for easy use.

Closing Thoughts

The tips above are meant to help you keep your matcha as fresh and delicious as possible, but they are not hard rules. Simply, we hope our advice helps you enjoy your matcha the way you like it, every time.
