This matcha is our exclusive blend from the most prestigious farms in Kyoto. High-class richness, delicate sweetness, and unique taste notes each year.
Note: Available while supplies last
Every year, the highest-regarded tencha* farmers in Japan enter the best of their harvest into tea competitions, hoping to earn prestige and recognition for their efforts.
Premium Select Matcha is our exclusive blend that selects from these farmers’ competition-level harvests. This blend is available once per year for a short period.
*Tencha is the name for shade-grown tea leaves ground to make matcha powder.
As a high-class Ippodo matcha, Premium Select Matcha has a rich, full-bodied character and a long finish. Our blending team crafts it to display the luscious umami typical of tea that comes from prestigious Kyoto fields. At the same time, they are careful to allow each year’s unique taste notes to shine through in the blend.
This year’s Premium Select Matcha has a round, sonorous umami. On first sip, we are greeted by richness that expands and blossoms, followed by a pleasantly clean and focused astringency. Its fragrance is sweet and lush, while its color is verdant like the spring undergrowth in the mountains south of Kyoto.
To make comparisons, at first it reminds us of the savory smells of broccoli sautéing in butter. In the finish, a juicy, bright taste like cacao resonates beautifully.
We recommend this year’s robust release of Premium Select Matcha to those who enjoy (or would like to try) full-forced Ippodo matcha blends. Try it as koicha for the most luscious experience, or serve it straight as usucha with a chocolate to nibble on the side.
