Every year, the highest-regarded tencha* farmers in Japan enter the best of their harvest into tea competitions, hoping to earn prestige and recognition for their efforts.

Premium Select Matcha is our exclusive blend that selects from these farmers’ competition-level harvests. This blend is available once per year for a short period.

*Tencha is the name for shade-grown tea leaves ground to make matcha powder.

As a high-class Ippodo matcha, Premium Select Matcha has a rich, full-bodied character and a long finish. Our blending team crafts it to have delicate young-bud sweetness and umami typical of tea that comes from these prestigious fields. At the same time, they are careful to allow each year’s unique taste notes to shine through in the blend.

This year’s Premium Select Matcha has a round, mellow, approachable character. Its fragrance is soft and billowing, and its butter-like umami blossoms beautifully in the aftertaste. Sipping it reminds us of buttered snap peas and bread dough rising on the countertop.

We recommend trying this tea first as koicha (thick tea), in order to best appreciate its flavor and aroma.

My palate isnt formed enough to discern premium and regular matcha powder.

Wish I'd Ordered More

Really loved this year's Premium Select Matcha. The quality is incredible and iced oat matcha's haven't been this good since last year's premium select blends.

Obsessed

Just made my usual hot matcha with a dash of oat milk using this, and I’m already obsessed. Can’t wait to try it in an iced matcha latte when it gets a little warmer outside. Without a doubt the best matcha I’ve ever made at home. So happy I decided to switch to Ippodo and I’m not going back!

A gentle taste of spring…

Premium Select Matcha has a soft, subtle taste with a lilting sweetness. It makes me think of cherry blossoms… not that this matcha shares their flavor, rather it shares their gentle delicacy. I am quite enjoying it.
